THE BARBARY APES OF GIBRALTAR
They arrived on the Rock of Gibraltar from North Africa around a thousand years ago. Known as Barbary Apes these tailless primates are actually monkeys, a species known as Macaques. There are currently about three hundred of them living on the top of the rock, descendants of sailors’ pets that escaped or were released from visiting ships.
